Saving Energy Through Reducing Extraction
Variable air volume (VAV) is a method of reducing the volume of extracted air.
This is achieved through monitoring the face velocity and actuating a volume control damper on the outlet of the fume cupboard. As the air velocity increases over a set point (usually 0.4 or 0.5m/s) the damper will close to reduce the volume extracted.
"Customers can reduce air volumes by up to 85%"
This means that whilst the fume cupboard sashes are closed, less heated/cooled air is being extracted out of the room, reducing your energy bills and improving the ambient temperature for the end users.
Understanding DW154: Why Compliance Matters
DW154 is the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) specification that defines the design, materials, and installation standards for plastic ductwork systems. Unlike standard metal ducting, plastic ductwork is essential in environments where chemical resistance and corrosion prevention are required.
- Material Requirements – Only high-performance PVC, polypropylene (PP), or glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) can be used, ensuring resistance to chemical attack.
- Fabrication Standards – Ductwork must be precision-manufactured with sealed joints to prevent leaks and maintain airflow efficiency.
- Installation Best Practices – Proper bracketing, support, and sealing methods must be used to ensure long-term reliability and compliance with safety regulations.
Note: Auto-Sash is an additional option to the VAV fume cupboard.
Why is DW154 Compliance Important?
Laboratories and industrial facilities handle hazardous substances that, if not properly extracted, can pose serious health and safety risks. A non-compliant extraction system could lead to:
- Corrosion and System Failures – Poor-quality materials degrade over time, leading to costly repairs and safety hazards.
- Reduced Airflow Efficiency – Ineffective ducting design can result in poor fume containment, increasing exposure risks.
- Legal & Regulatory Issues – Failure to meet health and safety standards could result in non-compliance with HSE (Health & Safety Executive) regulations.
