Fume Cupboard Lead Times: What to Expect From Order to Install

"How long will this take?" is usually the second question on every enquiry, right after "how much?" It's a fair question: fume cupboards are often on the critical path for a lab fit-out or refurbishment, and a slipped delivery date can hold up an entire project.

Here's our standard process, our typical lead time, and the specification choices that can change it.

6 Weeks: Fast for the Industry

Six weeks from drawing approval to a fully installed fume cupboard is quick for this industry. At least one well known fume cupboard manufacturer publishes its own lead time guide stating that cabinet installation typically takes 12 to 20 weeks, regardless of brand. Our standard programme is roughly a third of that.

General bespoke furniture and joinery outside the lab sector runs on a similar timescale: industry guides for bespoke, made-to-order furniture and joinery typically cite 8 to 16 weeks from design approval to install.


What Can Extend the 6 Weeks

Worktop material

Standard worktop materials (such as Trespa, polypropylene, or epoxy) fit inside our normal 6-week programme. Two upgrades that typically push the lead time out:

  • Ceramic worktops: a specialist, made-to-order material sourced from a dedicated supplier.

  • Stainless steel worktops: fabricated to your exact dimensions rather than held in stock.

Both are worth it for the right application, but factor in extra time. We'll flag it at the quote stage, and confirm the exact impact once your drawing is approved and the order goes to our suppliers.

Beyond worktop material, anything outside our standard specification, unusual dimensions, non-standard services integration, or a particularly busy period in the workshop, can move the date in either direction. We'll always confirm a firm date at order.


Built In Place: No Palleting

A lot of fume cupboards are manufactured off-site as a single pre-fabricated unit, shipped on a pallet, and craned or forklifted into position. That works fine for a ground-floor unit with wide-open access, but it's a real problem on upper floors, in occupied buildings, or anywhere with standard-width doors and corridors.

Pre-Fabricated & Palletised

Built off-site as one unit. Needs wide doorways, lifts, or cranes to get into position. Can mean removing windows, doors, or wall sections on tight sites.

Built In Place (our approach)

Our own installers assemble the cupboard on site, component by component. Everything travels flat-packed, so it goes through standard doors and corridors, no special access needed.

For estates and facilities teams, that means simpler logistics on a live site: no booking a crane, no protecting corridors for an oversized load, and no coordinating building access around a single delivery window. It's one of the reasons we can hold to a consistent lead time regardless of which floor, or which building, the cupboard is going into.
