Design and supply of 2 New fume cupboards for a new growing media laboratory at a industrial site.

Westland

Project Overview

ILS was appointed to design, supply, and install a high-performance extraction solution for a new growing medium lab. The project centered on the installation of two 1200mm K8 Fume Cupboards, along with a robust extraction system.

Building on our reputation for precision in industrial environments, we worked closely with the client to ensure the new equipment integrated seamlessly into their existing workflow while meeting stringent safety and environmental standards.

The Challenge

The primary obstacle for this project was the physical environment of the site. The extraction system required a complex ducting route terminating on a difficult-to-access roof area.

Due to the height and the specific layout of the facility, standard installation methods were not viable. Furthermore, the installation had to be conducted without disrupting the site’s daily operations, requiring meticulous planning regarding equipment lifting and contractor movement within a high-activity industrial zone.

Our Solution

To overcome the logistical hurdles, our team utilized MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) access to safely reach the roof installation points. By employing specialised lifting equipment and strictly adhering to the customer’s internal Health and Safety site procedures, we managed the “high-risk” phase of the install with zero incidents.

The technical solution included:

  • Two 1500mm K8 Fume Cupboards: Configured for maximum internal working volume.
  • Bespoke Extraction System: High-efficiency centrifugal fans mounted on the roof.
  • Safety Integration: Full commissioning in accordance with BS EN 14175 to ensure optimal face velocity and containment.

Results

The project was delivered on time and within the specified safety parameters. Since the commissioning of the new system, the customer has reported a significant improvement in their laboratory’s air quality and operational throughput.

The successful navigation of the roof access challenges further solidified our partnership with the client, proving that even the most logistically difficult sites can be outfitted with premium laboratory equipment when handled with the right expertise.
